IT’S OFFICIAL: Bayelsa governor Douye Diri resigns from PDP

Duoye Diri

Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa state, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Diri announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday during a cabinet meeting at the government house in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The governor said he left the opposition party for “very obvious reasons”.

“Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party for very obvious reasons,” Diri said.

“I am grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us, and I want to thank all of you. Together, we will continue to build a strong, virile Bayelsa state and a strong and virile country by extension.”

The governor added that members of his cabinet and the state house of assembly have also resigned from the PDP with him.

Diri’s resignation from the PDP comes barely 24 hours after Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu, left the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
