International news organisations are projecting Joe Biden, candidate of the Democratic Party, as the winner of the 2020 US presidential election.

CNN, NBC, the BBC and Associated Press are some of the global media organisations that have called it for Biden.

In a news broadcast, CNN declared Biden ”elected president”.

Associated Press was more affirmative in its declaration. It tweeted: ”JOE BIDEN DEFEATS PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP. The Associated Press declares Joe Biden the winner of a grueling campaign for the American presidency. He will lead a polarized nation through a historic collision of health, economic and social crises.”

Fox News, a pro-Republican news organisation, also called it for Trump.

The US election, held on Tuesday, has been a roller-coaster of surprises.

Biden defeated US President Donald Trump, candidate of the Republican Party, in states that are Republican strongholds.

Biden, former US vice-president, has garnered more popular and electoral votes than Trump.

He polled 74,847,963 popular votes (50.6%), while Trump got 70,591,853 votes (47.7%).

The former US vice-president also polled 290 electoral votes out of 538. Only 270 is required for a candidate to be declared president.

Trump stalled at 214 electoral votes.

The US operates an electoral college system — with states having a certain number of electors.

The electors are chosen based on the voting pattern in the federating states.

They will meet and vote in December while the inauguration of the president-elect will take place in January.
