The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new twist on Saturday after governors withdrew support for Ali Modu Sheriff, chairman of the party.
Trouble started at Sharks Stadium at the end of a meeting held ahead of the convention.
A source at the meeting told TheCable that it was clear that the governors were behind Ahmed Makarfi, former Kaduna state governor.
The governors had suggested that an interim committee be set up to be in charge of the party for 90 days after which national officers will be elected, but Sheriff disagreed arguing that the convention should be suspended in compliance with a court order.
The idea did not go down well with the governors who decided to go ahead with the exercise, forcing Sheriff to leave in annoyance.
Addressing a press conference after leaving the venue, Sheriff said he would remain in office till 2018.
He said he had used the powers conferred on him as chairman to suspend the exercise, boasting that nothing fruitful will come out of the convention.
However, Uche Secondus, deputy national chairman of the party, stepped in and declared the convention open.
Proceedings were ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
