A COVID-19 patient has been delivered of a baby at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The hospital broke the news in a tweet on Monday afternoon, saying the mother and child are well and alive.

“A team of LUTH Drs, anaesthetists & nurses delivered a woman with Covid19 of a baby girl this afternoon 40yr old mother & 3.3kg baby are doing fine. Our gratitude go to these gallant men & women & all warriors making d nation proud in d face of this scourge,” the tweet read.

LUTH is one of the places where COVID-19 patients in Lagos are receiving treatment. On April 7, a 60-bed isolation centre was inaugurated at the hospital shortly after an inspection by Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, and other members of the presidential task force for COVID-19 inspected the facility.

Chris Bode, chief medical director of LUTH, had said the hospital rose up to the occasion after receiving support from the presidential committee and the state government.

“With the help and assistance of the minister and Lagos government, we have been able to put together a block of four wards containing 60 beds altogether with enough personal protective equipment and all what we need,” Bode had said.

“We have a squad of 120 members of staff, all warriors to combat this condition in LUTH. They have all been trained and are experts.”

Bode said the hospital has specialists for tougher cases and the isolation centre had been cornered off.

Lagos has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, 689 of 1,273 infections in Nigeria.
