Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) brought Omoyele Sowore, convener of the RevolutionNow Movement, into a federal high court in Abuja through the backdoor on Monday.
Some supporters of the activist who were outside waiting to catch a glimpse of him did not get to see Sowore.
Spotting a white shirt, Sowore was all smiles as he was cheered by a few of his supporters who made it into the courtroom.
Alongside Olawale Bakare, his co-defendant, Sowore is to be arraigned on a seven-count charge.
Among the charges filed against him are conspiracy to commit treason and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.
The government also accused Sowore of money laundering and cyberstalking.
He was arrested in Lagos on August 3 ahead of a planned nationwide protest and later moved to Abuja.
The protest, the government said, was aimed at removing the president during his term of office otherwise than by constitutional means.
The court had earlier granted the DSS request to keep Sowore for 45 days but he was later granted bail.
However, the agency refused to release him despite fulfilling his bail condition.
