President Goodluck Jonathan has removed Abba Suleiman as the inspector general of police and appointed Sunday Arase in an acting position.

This was announced on Twitter by Reuben Abati, presidential spokesman.

This development is coming less than five weeks to the end of Jonathan’s tenure, and no reason was given for the decision.

Suleman would be remembered for his controversial decision last year to declare Aminu Tambuwal as former speaker of the house of representatives following Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tambuwal’s police aides were withdrawn.

Arase was the head of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.
