NCDC confirms 30 new coronavirus cases — 25 in Lagos

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 30 new COVID-19 cases in five states across the country.

The agency made the announcement in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

In the first set of tweets made around 9:20 pm, NCDC announced 19 new cases.

According to the breakdown, Lagos recorded 14 cases; two in the federal capital territory, while Kano, Akwa Ibom and Edo recorded one case each.

However, barely two hours after the NCDC confirmed 19 new cases, 11 new cases were recorded.

This was also announced via the organisation’s Twitter handle at 11:01 pm on Tuesday.

All 11 cases were recorded in Lagos, bringing the state’s total to 214.

As of 11:01 pm on April 14, 2020, Nigeria had recorded 373 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Earlier on Tuesday, Chikwe Ihekweazu, NCDC director-general, had at the media briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19, said efforts were ongoing to take advantage of the lockdown extension declared by President Muhammadu Buhari in Lagos, Ogun and the federal capital territory, to expand more on testing capacity, as well as contact tracing.

Also addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos state, announced efforts by the state to do more on testing, especially with door-to-door contact tracing in areas identified as hotspots.

Lagos alone has recorded more than half of the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the country, with 214 cases. Of that number, as of April 14, 2020, the state has discharged 69 patients.

Meanwhile, of Nigeria’s total of 373 confirmed cases, 99 persons have been discharged, while 11 deaths have been recorded.
