Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, has reportedly been attacked at Nwanja Junction on Trans-Amadi road.
Simeon Nwakaudu, the governor’s spokesman, said the attack was carried out by operatives of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) and soldiers of the Nigerian army attached to Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation.
He said the incident took place on Saturday while the governor was on project inspection in the state.
He said the SARs personnel and soldiers in the minister’s convoy hit the governor’s escort rider and attacked the policemen in the pilot car.
Nwakaudu said one of Amaechi’s aide-de-camp identified as Debewari supervised the alleged attack “which included damage of cameras held by journalists”.
The statement read: “Also part of the attack, was the commander of Rivers SARS, Mr. Akin Fakorede who received the minister of transportation at the Port Harcourt International Airport and accompanied him on his trip.
“After the attack, the Rivers state governor continued with his inspection of Projects. Governor Wike was not harmed, despite the attack.
“The minister of transportation had over 50 SARS personnel, soldiers and mobile policemen in his motorcade.”
When contacted, David Iyiofor, Amaechi’s spokesman, said a statement will be released regarding the incident.
“I know why you are calling, just give us a few minutes, you will get a statement,” he told TheCable.
