Bricklayer remanded for ‘beating up’ policeman

 Tunde Okunuga, a bricklayer, Seyi Okunuga, a trader, and Taiwo Olawole, also an artisan, are currently in detention for allegedly beat up two police officers  in Ondo state.

The accused are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, assault, obstruction on lawful duty and disorderly conduct.

On Monday, a magistrates court in the Okitipupa area of the state imposed a fine of N100,000 each of them.

Zedekiah Orogbemi, the prosecutor, had told the court that the accused beat up Segun Orimisan and Samson Oladunwoye, two policemen, on Eni Street, Okitipupa, on February 29.

Orogbemi said the accused allegedly attacked the policemen while they were arresting one Seyi Okunuga for an offence.

They accused however pleaded not guilty.

Banji Ayeomoni, the magistrate, also ordered that each of the accused should produce a surety in like sum, adding that each surety should have evidence of a year tax payment.

Ayeomoni adjourned the case till March 20, for substantive hearing.
