BRICS summit: Nigeria bids for women exporters fund

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), says Nigeria has successfully bid for the women exporters in the digital economy (WEIDE) fund.

In a statement on her X page, the WTO chief congratulated Nigeria for the successful bid during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, on the sidelines of the ongoing 17th BRICS summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Catching up with H.E President Tinubu @officialABAT at the BRICS Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro,” the statement reads.

“Talking about Nigeria’s successful bid for the @WTO-@ITCnews WEIDE Fund, designed to support women in digital trade.

“This fund will help scale up women owned enterprises in the digital space. Congratulations Nigeria!”

The $50 million WEIDE Fund, launched by the WTO and International Trade Centre (ITC) in February 2024, aims to empower women entrepreneurs by assisting them in growing their businesses through international trade and digitalisation.

Speaking during the summit on Saturday, Tinubu said there should be equity and inclusion for low-income and emerging economies in global financial systems.
