British air force jets early Thursday attacked Islamic State targets in Syria for the first time, just hours after the strikes were given parliamentary approval.
A statement by the ministry of defence said that four RAF Tornado jets equipped with guided missiles took off from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus.
The jets conducted the “first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes,” a ministry spokesman said.
The bombings targeted an oil field under Islamic State control in eastern Syria, a report stated.
Parliament voted decisively 397-223 late Wednesday in favour of launching the Syria airstrikes, after an intense debate lasting 10 hours.
The strikes meant that Britain has joined countries including the U.S. France and Russia in attacking the extremist group in Syrian territory.
