Some youths in Kano set ablaze houses belonging to Kabiru Gaya, a former senator, and Abdullahi Mahmoud, an ex member of the house of representatives, for allegedly failing to fulfill promises made during the 2015 electioneering campaign.

While Gaya’s personal residence was affected, Mahmoud had his campaign office and poultry farm destroyed.

A witness told NAN that the incident occurred around 11am on Wednesday, explaining that the protesters regrouped after being initially dispersed by security personnel.

The suspected arsonists were said to be heading to destroy the residence of the chairman of Gaya local government, before being over powered by security men deployed to quell the violence.

Magaji Majiya, police public relations officer in the state, confirmed the incident, and said efforts were in place to restore normalcy.

“Our men in Gaya are still trying to bring the situation under control but as soon as we get details of the incident, we will keep you posted,” he said.
