Moses Ayom, chief executive officer (CEO) of Hongye International, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for prioritising climate change issues.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ayom said Buhari has shown commitment in implementing policies that would build a climate-resilient economy.

The CEO said this following the president’s comments while addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the US.

Buhari had said: “The impact of climate change is already with us in Nigeria, manifesting in various ways: conflicts trigger; food insecurity, drying up of lakes; loss of livelihood, and youth migration, among others.

“We are working on a transition to a low carbon economy, consistent with achieving the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Ayom said Buhari is headed on the right path owing to the dangers of climate change.

“By prioritizing climate change and the drive to transition Nigeria to a carbon-neutral economy, the president has sent a strong signal to world leaders that it is committed to the ideals of the Paris Climate Agreement as stated in the National Policy on Climate Change,” the CEO said.

“Nigeria is a signatory to the Paris Climate Agreement and has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030, when compared to ‘business-as-usual’ levels.

“Now, 2030 is less than ten years away, so it is crucial to not only sustain the momentum of measures but to up them.”

Ayom said his company’s decision to develop Ketti District as a Green City is in tandem with Buhari’s climate smart policy posture.

“The energy savings would be immense, and the carbon footprint/impact on the environment would be near zero,” he said.

“Ketti Green City would be a great addition to the efforts of the Nigerian government to meet its climate change targets.”
