President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Amina Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, on her re-appointment.

In a statement by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, on Saturday, Buhari also congratulated Antonio Guterres on his re-appointment as UN secretary-general.

According to NAN, Shehu said Buhari expressed hope that their passion to promote peace, alleviate poverty, improve health, and empower more people would record more results.

Buhari said Mohammed’s extension in office will further encourage more women, particularly in Africa and Nigeria, to aspire to new heights of leadership, dream beyond the borders of their country, and learn from her dedication to seeing lives transformed for the better.

He had succeeded Ban Ki-moon in January 2017 as the ninth secretary-general.

At a media briefing on Friday, Guterres asked Amina Mohammed to serve as deputy secretary-general for a second term.

Before her appointment in 2017, Mohammed was Nigeria’s minister of environment under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

She had also served as the special adviser to Ban Ki-moon on post-2015 development planning, which focused on the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals.
