‎The senate has postponed its resumption to put its house in order and present a common front to President Muhammadu Buhari when he returns from his US trip, TheCable has gathered.

A statement signed by the acting senate clerk on Friday simply said: “This is to inform all distinguished senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the resumption of the senate in plenary has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 21st July 2015 to Tuesday, 28th July, 2015.”

However, TheCable understands that the senators want to use the opportunity of Buhari’s foreign trip “to sit down and reason together” to resolve the crisis rocking the upper chamber following the leadership election and the appointment of principal officers.

The APC governors had recommended that all outstanding issues, including setting up of committees, should be resolved before the senate reconvenes.

A senator told TheCable: “Reconvening next week without resolving the outstanding matters would be unhelpful. So some of us reasoned that since the president would be away for a few days starting from this Sunday, we should not reconvene yet.

“Rather, we should use the opportunity to come together, sort out the contending issues and arrive at some workable agreements. By the time Buhari returns from his US trip, the senate would be ready for business.”

Not a single motion has been moved on the floor because of the controversies surrounding the emergence of Bukola Saraki as senate president and Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP as his deputy – as well as the appointment of principal officers.
