President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with families of the casualties of the three-story building that collapsed in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos state.

According to a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, the president is pained by the tragic incident.

The three-story building collapsed on Sunday night, trapping many in the rubble.

About eight people have already been confirmed dead and 23 occupants of the building have been rescued.

Rescue operations are still ongoing at the site of the incident.

Buhari saluted the courage and determination of the first responders, national and sub-national emergency agencies, as well as compassionate Nigerians.

He said their immediate actions in the aftermath of the incident led to the rescue of several persons.

The president noted that the frequency of building collapses in the country has become increasingly embarrassing.

He called on the relevant state authorities to work closely with professional bodies to put a halt to the incidents.

The president wished those injured a speedy recovery and prayed for divine assistance in the ongoing search and rescue operations.
