President Boni Yayi of Benin on Saturday said Burkina Faso will return to civilian rule and an interim government led by President Michel Kafando will be reinstated.
Yayi, who alongside President Macky Sall of Senegal are in Burkina Faso to mediate in the crisis that has engulfed the francophone country, said the coup will be reversed.
“We are going to relaunch the transition underway – a transition led by civilians, with Michel Kafando,” he told reporters after a meeting with coup leader Gilbert Diendere in the capital Ouagadougou.
The military announced the dissolution of the transitional government on Thursday after detaining Kafando, Isaac Zida, the country’s prime minister, and some top government officials at the presidential palace on Wednesday.
While Kafando and two ministers have been released, Zida has not been seen.
Conflicts, which signaled the end of Blaise Comparore’s 27-year reign, have returned to Ouagadougou and several parts of Burkina Faso.
About 10 persons are said to have been killed while hundreds have sustained injuries in the last few days.
Before the recent developments, Burkina Faso was planning to hold its election on October 11.
