Burst tyre: AIB begins investigation of Air Peace aircraft incident

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) says it has commenced an investigation into an accident involving a Boeing 737-300 aircraft operated by Air Peace.

The tyre of the aircraft, with nationality and registration marks 5N-BUQ, burst during landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

A total of 127 passengers and six crew members were on board when the incident happened.

Tunji Oketunbi, AIB general manager for public affairs, said the agency has been notified of the incident. “Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has been notified and commenced an investigation into a serious incident involving a Boeing 737-300 with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BUQ operated by Air Peace Airline, which occurred around 9:31 pm (local time) on 8th March 2021,” the statement read.

“The aircraft, with 127 passengers and 6 crew members onboard was en-route Lagos from Abuja. The aircraft had a burst tyre on landing on Runway 18R of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria and taxied to GAT to park.

“There was no injury or fatality.”

Oketunbi also called on the public to assist its probe by providing available evidence.

He urged the public not to assume the cause of the accident until a formal report is released.
