Saliu Mustapha, senatorial candidate for Kwara Central, All Progressives Congress (APC), has pledged to support Kwara United with $20,000 ahead of the team’s match against AS Douanes of Niger in Lagos on Sunday.

Kwara United FC and AS Douanes will play behind closed doors on Sunday at the first leg of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies Confederation Cup match.

Mustapha said this in a statement on his social media platforms on Saturday.

He said the package includes a promise of $500 for every goal scored in the first leg of the encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson stadium Onikan.

“I am pledging $500 for each goal to encourage the team to score as many goals as possible against the Nigeriens and there is an additional $10,000 on the table for the players if they make it into the group stage,” he said.

“An even more handsome cash reward awaits Kwara United if they win the tournament.

“I have equally directed my team to make adequate transport arrangements, in conjunction with the Supporters’ Club of Kwara United, for fans who may be willing to watch the match live in Lagos. There will also be regular tickets made available free for the contingent.

“This is my modest way of supporting Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s vision of constantly positioning Kwara on the big stage through sports and other endeavours. More importantly, this gesture would encourage Kwara United FC to make Kwara and Nigeria proud in the continental competition.

“It is my expectation that the financial reward will spur the team to achieve greatness, which has been their hallmark for years.”

Last month, Mustapha, also the Turaki of Ilorin, sponsored an ‘open gate’ arrangement for the team’s supporters to watch, free of charge, the final home match against Mountain of Fire FC in the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
