Cameroon bow out with their heads high

Many pundits had expected Brazil to humilate the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Friday night but the reverse was the case.

Vincent Aboubakar’s powerful header was enough to seal the win over the five-time champions.

The stoppage-time goal didn’t help Cameroon reach the round of 16 but it handed Brazil their first group stage loss in 24 years and gave Africa its first win against the Seleçao at the tournament.

The Cameroonians will surely be proud of their performance despite crashing out.

South Korea cause upset

The 2002 World Cup semi-finalists squared up against Portugal and gave a good account of themselves.

The win earned them just about enough points to qualify for the second round.

Kosovo-born Shaqiri hits back at fans

There was no doubt where Xherdan Shaqiri was headed after scoring the first goal in Switzerland’s 3-2 win over Serbia on Friday.

Born in Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, Shaqiri ran straight to the opposing fans to celebrate — putting his finger to his lips after having been previously taunted by that section of the crowd.

The result lifted his team into the World Cup Round of 16 for the third tournament in a row.

Ghana and Uruguay fall short

When Luiz Suarez was substituted in the 66th minute of the game, Uruguay was in a decent position to advance to the knockout stage for a fourth straight World Cup.

He had played key roles in both Uruguay goals which came after Ghana captain Andre Ayew missed a 21st-minute penalty.

However, South Korea’s last-gasp win over Portugal denied Uruguay a place in the second round.
