Cameroonian military authorities say their men have killed about 40 Boko Haram militants in Fotokol, a community in northeastern Cameroon close to the Nigerian border.

The insurgents had reportedly attacked an army convoy, forcing the soldiers to engage them in a shootout. They then fled as they could not withstand the superior firepower of the Cameroonian forces.

“Dozens of Boko Haram militants on Monday afternoon raided the Cameroonian town of Fotokol near the border with Nigeria,” Lieutenant-Colonel Didier Badjeck said on Tuesday.

“The gunmen opened fire on a column of Cameroonian soldiers who, in turn, fired back. At least 40 Boko Haram militants were killed during the exchange of fire and two cars [belonging to] the attackers were captured and burnt.”

He confirmed that a Cameroonian soldier was injured in the exchange, but said normalcy had been restored in the community.
