A Josee Belanger 52nd minute strike gave hosts Canada a 1-0 win over Switzerland in their round-of-16-clash at the VC Place, Vancouver.

Belanger profited from captain Christine Sinclair’s assist to drill home in a crowded box.

Canada will remain in Vancouver for Saturday’s quarter-final against the winner of England-Norway clash.

Australia caused the upset of the day after Kyah Simon’s goal earned them a 1-0 win over Brazil in Moncton – their first ever knockout game victory at any senior FIFA World Cup.

Simon’s goal was the first Brazil had conceded in almost four hours of football at Canada 2015, and despite Formiga hitting the post, both sides were restricted to few chances in a tense match.

France will face Germany in a mouth-watering quarter-final after beating Korea Republic 3-0.

Les Bleues came out flying and took a 2-0 lead within eight minutes.

A combination play between Camille Abily and Laure Boulleau found Marie Laure Delie to open the scoring. Minutes later, a similar sequence this time between Elodie Thomis and Eugenie Le Sommer resulted in the No12 firing past Kim Jungmi for the second.

Just minutes into the second half, a piece of individual brilliance from Le Sommer helped seal the victory for Les Bleues, who will face Germany in the game of the next round.
