It’s no hoax, but Cape Verde have beaten a Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal on the eve of April Fool’s day.

Portugal top their Euro 2016 qualifying group and decided to rest their captain against the African side but finished with 10 men in the 2-0 defeat.

Odair Junior Lopes Fortes gave Cape Verde – once a colony of Portugal – the lead in the 36th minute at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota in front of just 3,500 fans.

The home team and their fans were stunned yet again when the visitors doubled their advantage through Admilson Gege’s close-range effort.

The hosts then had Andre Pinto sent off to round off an embarrassing evening in Estoril.

Cape Verde – eliminated at the group stage of this year’s Orange Africa Cup of Nations – are ranked 38th in the world compared to Portugal who are 7th.
