Cargo operations suspended as maritime workers shut down Lagos port terminal
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Thursday shut down the premises of AP Moller Terminals (APMT) at the Lagos Ports Complex in Apapa, over an alleged breach of local content law.
The terminal will not be able to receive or exit cargoes for the next 24 hours, according to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
“Following a dispute with the management of AP Moller Terminals at the Lagos Ports Complex, Apapa, members of the Maritime Workers Union have today, Thursday April 15, 2021, disrupted operations at the terminal,” a statement on NPA’s official Twitter handle read.
“While the Authority is working towards resolving the dispute between the two parties, APMT will not be able to receive or exit cargoes for the next 24 hours.
“The Authority hereby calls on stakeholders to please take note as ETO tickets will not be issued to APMT bound cargoes.”

The union have accused the management of APMT of employing foreigners for jobs that Nigerians are capable of doing.
MWUN had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to the terminal operator to address the issue or face industrial unrest.
Weilding placards with inscriptions such as: “We say no to racism”, “Nigerians are qualified to do this job. Why foreigners?”, the maritime workers blocked all entrances to the terminal and prevented staff from gaining entry into the facilities.
