CCIJ’s investigative series ‘Democracy Deferred’ named finalist for 2025 Nonprofit News Awards

Democracy Deferred, an investigative series by the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ), has been named a finalist for the 2025 Nonprofit News Awards.

The awards, organised by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), recognise outstanding journalism produced by nonprofit newsrooms in good standing with the organisation.

Democracy Deferred is a collaborative work of journalists from nearly a dozen Nigerian newsrooms that exposed the violence, irregularities, and systemic suppression that marred Nigeria’s 2023 general election.

Through detailed investigative reporting, data analysis, and visual storytelling, the series provided an unprecedented examination of how democratic promises were undermined, affecting millions of Nigerians.

The project was supported by a grant from the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web.

According to the organisers, this year’s competition attracted close to 600 entries from newsrooms worldwide.

CCIJ stands out as one of only four organisations among more than 500 INN members to have been named a finalist every year since the awards began five years ago.

Jeff Lowenstein, CCIJ’s executive director, said the recognition is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of telling underreported stories that shape the future of democracy.

“We are immensely proud of our diverse, global team whose commitment and creativity brought Democracy Deferred to life, and grateful to everyone who has contributed to maintaining the consistently high quality of our work,” Lowenstein said.
