The Ilorin Emirate Descendant Progressive Union (IEDPU) has accused the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) of persecuting Bukola Saraki, the senate president.

The Ilorin-based group described the ongoing travails of the senate president as purely politically motivated.

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on the recent visit of the body to Saraki in Abuja, Abdulhamid Adi, president of the union, wondered why the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) failed to raise any issue concerning the senate president’s asset declaration forms since 2003.

According to him, the 12-year interval before unearthing the allegations calls for a suspicion of the CCB and its tribunal.

“I see it more or less a political persecution. It is purely political. Maybe there are some political opponents that are trying to get at him,” he said.

The  tribunal ordered Saraki’s arrest on Friday following the prayers of the counsel of the federal government, Muslim Hassan, to apprehend the nation’s number three citizen for failure to appear before the tribunal.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed support for Bukola Saraki, saying with “the deliberate infractions and crass abuse of power by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC federal government, it is no longer in doubt that the nation is on a quick slide into fascism and official terrorism.”
