The Chadian army says it killed more than 200 Boko Haram militants on Tuesday in a battle in the northeastern Nigerian towns of Gambaru and Ngala, which are near the border with Cameroon.
According to Reuters, the militants also attacked the town of Fotokol, which is within Cameroon’s border with Nigeria, on Wednesday, but they were repelled.
Isa Tchiroma, the Cameroonian minister of information, said the fighting in Fotokol lasted several hours.
“The insurgents have been driven out,” he said.
“They tried to surprise us because the Chadian troops who were in Fotokol had crossed over to Nigeria.”
It is suspected that some soldiers were killed in the latest Boko Haram onslaught.
On Tuesday, about 2,000 Chadian troops crossed into Nigeria, launching an offensive operation against the terror group.
The Nigerian military had assured Nigerians that the Chadian forces were on a sanctioned mission, dispelling fears that they had encroached on the country’s territory.
In January, the African Union (AU) endorsed a regional army of 7, 500 soldiers to boost Nigeria’s effort against insurgency.
The Chadian troops that crossed into Nigeria were part of the AU contingent.
