The Confederation of African Football has said it will use a video assistant referee (VAR) during the 2018 Total African Nations Championship in Morocco.

This was announced by the continental football body on Tuesday following a meeting by its referee’s’ committee in Cairo.

The VAR was first used in Japan at the 2016 Club World Cup.

It was also tested at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea and the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

“The experimentation of the VAR technology will commence from the quarter finals stage of next year’s tournament scheduled for 13 January to 4 February in the Moroccan cities of Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangiers and Agadir,” said a statement released by the referees’ committee.

“African referees shortlisted for FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 and with previous training in VAR will be called upon for the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.”

The home-based Super Eagles are among the sixteen countries that will feature at the 2018 CHAN in Morocco. The tournament is scheduled to hold from January 13 to February 4, 2018.
