Chidi Ajaegbu, former president of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has established a resource centre in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Chidi Ajaegbu ICAN Resource Centre in Umuahia, Ajaegbu said the contribution is aimed at empowering future generations by improving their access to professional accountancy education.
Ajaegbu, better known as the golden ICAN president as the 50th anniversary of the association was celebrated during his tenure, had earlier established a similar resource centre in Aba, Abia state.
“I have built these centres from my relative success as an accountant to give back to society. My expectations are that they would create opportunities for students to access learning resources in environments purposed for learning,” Ajaegbu said.
He noted that his accountancy scholarship schemes in Abia and Lagos states, with 115 beneficiaries, were in line with his belief in creating leadership through education.
On her part, Onome Joy Adewuyi, ICAN president, commended the former ICAN boss for “increasing the association’s cash reserve by 300 percent” when he served as treasurer in 2010.
She added that the completion of the Umuahia centre, which has “facilities for the cross-fertilisation of professional ideas, networking among chartered accountants, and ambience for ICAN students preparing for the Institute’s examinations”, in a record six months, was remarkable.
Dignataries at the unveiling of the Umuahia centre included Ude Oko Chukwu, deputy governor of Abia state, and Chris Ezem, secretary to the Abia state government.
