The complexities of climate change and its associated jargon can make it difficult to digest. TheCable’s climate quick facts will help to demystify these climate concepts through easy-to-understand and straight-to-the-point explanations.

Here are some to keep at the tip of your fingers:

  • Climate change effects such as sea ice loss, accelerated sea level rise, and more intense heat waves are irreversible and likely to increase over time, says the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  • A recent study by the European Central Bank found that temperature rise due to climate change would increase the cost of food worldwide between 1.49 and 1.79 percentage points every year by 2035.
  • According to the United Nations, greenhouse gas emissions come from burning fossil fuels such as gasoline and coal.
  • The UN added that clearing land and forests can also release carbon dioxide. Landfills for garbage are another source of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), sustainable agriculture uses up to 56 percent less energy and creates 64 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional farming.
