Community leaders condemn protest against Lagos monarch

Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom

A protest by a group of youths in Ilara Kingdom, Epe division of Lagos, has sparked outrage among residents and community leaders, who described the incident as sacrilegious and anti-development.

In a statement on Friday, some community leaders, under the auspices of Epe Division People Assembly and Lagos Focus Foundation, said the protest, which took place on October 29, saw some suspectedly sponsored youths march through the streets, chanting slogans against Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom.

The protesters accused the monarch of neglecting traditional and developmental matters due to his alleged absence from the town.

The statement titled “Vote of Confidence on Alara of Ilara Kingdom and Support for Our Royal Father” was signed by Fagbodun Oluwadamilare.

Oluwadamilare described the protest as the handiwork of “a few jobless, politically motivated youths”.

He said the monarch’s frequent travels are part of his efforts to attract investment and development to Ilara.

The community leaders further described the demonstration as “a dark day” in the history of the town, saying some “misguided youths” had allowed themselves to be used by “enemies of Ilara’s progress”.

They said the protesters, waving leaves and chanting inflammatory songs, placed fresh palm fronds on the palace — an act traditionally reserved for the king and considered a taboo when done by others.

“It would be a futile effort to attempt to remove the Alara or undermine his leadership through such acts,” the community leaders said.

“Ilara remains united behind Oba Ogunsanwo, whose reign has brought peace, progress, and partnerships from across the Niger to the community.”

The community leaders said the monarch has dismissed allegations of absenteeism and land mismanagement, insisting he has remained active in his duties.

“Since ascending the throne five years ago, Oba Ogunsanwo has been credited with initiatives that improved education, infrastructure and community welfare,” the statement reads.

“His leadership philosophy, AGAPE — Advancement Galvanized in an Atmosphere of Positive Engagement — focuses on unity and progress. His achievements include scholarships for indigent students, construction of classrooms, provision of school buses and partnerships with development groups such as the Rotary Club of Lagos.

“Oba Ogunsanwo has since convened a reconciliation meeting, saying he has forgiven the youths and urged unity.

“We will continue to work together to ensure Ilara Kingdom remains on the path of progress and prosperity.”
