The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a series of tweets on Friday, the organisation said a case was confirmed by a national reference laboratory in Kinshasa, the country’s capital city.
There was an outbreak of the virus in Nigeria in 2014, after an infected Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, entered the country.
The disease had ravaged Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, and was only recently contained in these countries.
WHO said it was working with its partners to support Congo’s ministry of health in tackling the situation.
“On 11 May 2017, the ministry of health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo notified WHO and partners of a lab-confirmed case of Ebola DRC,” the health organisation wrote on twitter.
“The Ebola case in the Democratic Republic of Congo was confirmed by a national reference laboratory in Kinshasa DRC.
“WHO and partners are supporting the ministry of health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the Ebola response DRC.”
