The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, a support group of Abdulaziz Yari, a former governor of Zamfara, has asked the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider his senate president bid.

Yari has insisted on running for senate president despite the zoning formula of the APC.

Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Barau Jibrin, senator representing Kano central, were recommended as president of the senate and deputy respectively.

Speaking with reporters in front of the APC headquarters on Wednesday, Husseini Abubakar, the NYCN president, said Yari is the best candidate the party could field for the position of senate president.

Abubakar said the north-west, Yari’s geopolitical zone, should be considered because it gave “historic votes” to Bola Tinubu, president-elect, during the last elections.

“We are here to endorse the candidacy of the former governor of Zamfara, Yari, for the position of senate president for the 10th senate,” he said.

“We stand to tell the world that the candidacy of Mr Yari is the best for the APC. We are also calling on the national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and all stakeholders concerned including President Muhammadu Buhari to support Yari.

“The historical votes count for Bola Tinubu was given by the people of the north-west and the north-west zone has never been represented in the position senate president or deputy.

“We are calling on all stakeholders to please consider Yari as the senate president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Yari is a man of integrity and accountability.”
