Construction workers at a building site narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when a two-storey structure they were working on in the Ikeja area of Lagos collapsed.

In a statement issued after the incident, Margaret Adeseye, director of Lagos State Fire Rescue Service, said no construction worker sustained injury.

“There has been a partial 2nd decking collapse of a two-storey building under construction,” the statement reads.

“The collapse was reported at about 13:03 hours on Wednesday at 17, Olanrewaju Street, Alausa, Ikeja to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service headquarters.

“Eventually, the crew was able to rescue the situation and forestall a secondary incident as no one was trapped and all the construction workers on site escaped unhurt.

“The state government has condoned off the structure for proper investigation into the remote cause of the collapse.”

The latest incident joins the worrisome trend of building collapse in Lagos.
