Court stands firm on order prompting MultiChoice to halt price increase

Court stands firm on order prompting MultiChoice to halt price increase

A federal high court in Abuja says its order halting the implementation of a price increase announced by MultiChoice Communications, the parent company of DSTV and GoTV, remains intact.

Nnamdi Dimgba, the judge, made the clarification on Tuesday following the complaint by Babatunde Irukera, lawyer to the federal government, that the company has declined to obey the order.

The company had announced new rates for DSTV and GoTV effective from August 1, 2018.

According to MultiChoice, the increase is due to the hike in inflation rates.

This prompted the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to file a case against it.

Dimgba, on August 23, ruled that the company should halt the increment of subscription rates to its cable television services till further notice.

However, the company described the court order as an “affront to the free market economy”.

“My order is in force. I believe it is in force until it is set aside. My order has to be obeyed. That is my position.” he said.
