A federal high court in Abuja has vacated an order freezing 24 bank accounts of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

On June 23, John Tsoho, the judge, issued a post-no-debit order on the accounts of the corps.

This followed an exparte application filed by the government (the prosecution), asking the court to freeze the accounts of the organisation for alleged fraud.

Dickson Akoh, national commandant of the corps, challenged the decision of the court in a counter application on the grounds that the prosecution misrepresented the facts of the case.

On Tuesday, Tsoho vacated his earlier order, holding that the prosecution was unable to counter the allegation of the defendant.

In March, the office of the Peace Corps of Nigeria in Abuja was raided by security agents. Akoh and some members of the corps were arrested and paraded before journalists for allegedly running an unlawful organisation.

The national assembly has passed a bill to give legitimacy to the organisation. But the president is yet to assent to it.
