COVID-19: CAF postpones 2022 AWCON qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The AWCON qualifiers were initially slated to take place from June 7 to 17.

The Super Falcons were paired to face Ghana, their West African arch-rival, in the first play-off round of qualifiers.

The continental body, however, announced the postponement in a statement sent to general secretaries of all association members on Monday.

Just like the men’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers that were shifted, the AWCON was postponed over issues bothering on travel restrictions in some countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“CAF Organizing Committee of Women Football decided to postpone the qualifiers of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 In line with the postponement of the Men World Cup qualifiers,” the statement read.

“The reasons for the postponements were based on the actual conditions of certain stadiums in Africa and the restrictions related to COVID-19.”

The first play-off will now take place during FIFA windows from October 18-26, 2021 while the second-round qualifiers were shifted to February 14-23, 2022.
