The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has dismissed claims that there is a mass outbreak of the coronavirus in the corporation’s estate in Garki, Abuja.

Kennie Obateru, NNPC’s spokesperson, said only one person who is not an official of the corporation tested positive for the disease.

Obateru said the victim “had just returned from the United Kingdom and developed symptoms of the decease.”

He, however, added that he has been taken into isolation and that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disinfected the area.

“His case was said to have been confirmed positive by the NCDC after undergoing a laboratory test and in line with NCDC approved protocol, all residents of the affected apartment were moved out and placed in Isolation, while officials of NCDC undertook a disinfection of the flat and adjoining areas to eliminate the chances of community infection,” Obateru said.

He added that the corporation “had long embarked on public awareness campaigns within NNPC and beyond its borders, including sharing with the residents of the estate, guidelines on successful self-supervised isolation to ensure strict adherence to all NCDC prescribed safety measures designed to tackle the COVID-19 global pandemic.”

NNPC in collaboration with 33 upstream oil companies have donated $30 million to help in the fight against coronavirus.
