COVID-19: Seven new deaths as Nigeria inches closer to 2,000 cases
Nigeria is 68 cases away from the 2,000 mark, two months after recording its index case of COVID-19.
On Thursday, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) announced seven new deaths and 204 fresh cases of the disease.
The country’s current total is 1,932 cases, 58 deaths and 319 recoveries. Nigeria crossed the 1,000 mark less than a week ago – on April 24.
On the sudden increase in cases, Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, listed ongoing community transmission and improved testing as possible causes.
With less than 96 hours to the lifting of the lockdown declared in Lagos, Ogun and the federal capital territory (FCT), concerns have been raised on the possibility of a more severe increase in the number of cases.
Ghana lifted its lockdown on April 20 and by April 30, its number of confirmed cases jumped to 2,074 with 1,032 cases recorded in 10 days.
Responding to a question on the reservations about easing the lockdown when the country is recording a spike in number of cases, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation, said it was not an easy choice for the federal government to make.
Lagos, Kano and the FCT currently account for 71 percent of the total number of confirmed cases, while Lagos alone accounts for more than half of the total figure, with 976 confirmed cases.
