Customs intercepts four truckloads of food items in Kano

The Kano state command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it has intercepted four trucks laden with food items, as part of its efforts to tackle smuggling.

In a statement on Tuesday, Saidu Nuradeen, spokesperson of the Kano command, said personnel of the service intercepted the vehicles transporting a significant quantity of food items intended for illegal export, along Hadeji-Taura-Ringim axis in Jigawa.

Nuradeen said the items seized include 1,505 dried fish cartons, 17 bags of local rice, and two bags of beans.

“Smuggling undermines legitimate trade channels, poses risks to public health and deprives the government of much needed revenue,” he said.

“The NCS reiterates its unwavering commitment to combat smuggling activities across all entry points into the country.”

He urged the public to provide credible information to enable the service stem smuggling, protect local industries and enhance food security.

IQ Ibudu, the zonal coordinator, Zone B, implored the Maigatari border community to comply with the directives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and adopt proactive measures to address socio-economic challenges.

Ibrahim Chana, area controller of the command, urged border communities to collaborate with the service and other security agencies to protect border posts, assuring of the service’s commitment to community relations.
