Nigeria on Wednesday recorded 167 cases of COVID-19. Here are five updates about the pandemic this Thursday.

US: We’ve donated 200m COVID vaccine doses 

The United States (US) says it has donated 200 million doses of COVID vaccine to more than 100 countries.

In a statement on Wednesday, the White House said more donations will be made especially next year to help save lives.

“As of today, the United States has successfully donated and delivered 200 million COVID-19 vaccines to more than 100 countries around the world,” the statement reads.

“These vaccines will help save lives, protect livelihoods, and heal economies currently battered by this pandemic.”

Ondo to bar unvaccinated civil servants from government offices

The Ondo state government says it will start restricting civil servants, who are yet to receive the COVID vaccine, from entering government offices.

Segun Odusanya, permanent secretary, Ondo ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs, said the presentation of COVID-19 vaccination cards has become a compulsory requirement for civil servants to access their workplaces.

According to him, the directive will be enforced from November 1 with compliance to COVID-19 protocol.

India celebrates administering one billion vaccine doses

India is celebrating a milestone of administering one billion COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the achievement as historic.

“India scripts history,” Modi said on Twitter.

“We are witnessing the triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of (1.3 billion) Indians”.

The government announced musical and video programmes to celebrate the achievement.

India is said to be the second country to reach the landmark after China set the record in June.

Edo: COVID cases declining — vaccination efforts yielding results

The Edo government says the state has continued to record a decline in the number of confirmed COVID cases.

Osagie Ebomwonyi, head of the state COVID-19 case management team, said the state has intensified vaccination as part of efforts to contain the pandemic.

He said the state is aiming to achieve herd immunity against the virus, adding that the vaccination team is also visiting markets, where mobilisation and sensitisation are being done.

Nigeria logs 167 COVID cases

Nigeria on Wednesday confirmed 167 fresh COVID infections.

The Nigeria Centre of Disease Control (NCDC) said the cases were reported in nine states.

According to the agency’s data, Taraba recorded 109 cases — 65 percent — of the total confirmed cases on Wednesday.

Other states with new cases are Lagos (17), Plateau (16), Bauchi (11), Rivers (6), Delta (3), Akwa Ibom (2), Imo (2) and Bayelsa (1).

The NCDC said the 109 cases reported from Taraba state include data from 7th (22), 8th (2), 11th (5), 12th (5), 13th (14), 14th (27), 15th (14), and 20th (20) of October.

Also, 178 patients were discharged on Wednesday after they recovered from the infection.

Two persons were said to have died of COVID complications.

To date, Nigeria has confirmed a total of 209,713 cases, 197,724 recoveries and 2,840 deaths across the country.
