WHO: Vaccinated people must take safety COVID precautions
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), says people still need to take safety precautions despite being vaccinated against COVID-19.
The WHO chief warned against having a “false sense of security” after being vaccinated against the virus.
“In many countries and communities, we are concerned about a false sense of security that vaccines have ended the pandemic, and that people who are vaccinated do not need to take any other precautions,” Tedros said.
“Vaccines save lives, but they do not fully prevent transmission.
“Data suggest that before the arrival of the Delta variant, vaccines reduced transmission by about 60 percent; with Delta, that has dropped to about 40 percent.
“We cannot say this clearly enough: even if you are vaccinated, continue to take precautions to prevent becoming infected yourself, and infecting someone else who could die.
“That means wearing a mask, maintaining distance, avoiding crowds and meeting others outside if you can, or in a well-ventilated space inside.”
PAHO warns of rising COVID infections in Americas
The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) says fresh COVID infections jumped 23 percent in the Americas last week.
The health organisation warned that the region could risk following trends in Europe, where many countries are imposing lockdown to tackle infection surge.
“These trends are telling. Even though COVID cases have dropped significantly over the last few months, COVID transmission is still active across our region, so every time we lower our guard, the virus gains momentum,” Carissa Etienne, PAHO director, said.

Nigeria records 141 COVID cases
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 141 cases have been reported across the country.
The agency the fresh infections were recorded in 11 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).
The states with new cases are Lagos (46), Benue (44), FCT (15), Kastina (12), Bauchi (9), Kano (4), Delta (3), Enugu (2), Kwara (2), Rivers (2), while Gombe and Plateau reported one case each.
The agency said the cases confirmed in Benue, the FCT and Bauchi are backlogs infections.
The NDCD data showed that 219 people recovered from the infection.
No COVID fatality was reported on Wednesday leaving the fatality figure at 2,974.
So far, Nigeria has confirmed 213,818 infections and 207,016 recoveries.
