Group donates COVID palliatives to Akwa Ibom community
The South Korea International Cooperation Association in Nigeria (SKICAN) has donated COVID-19 palliatives to Afua, a community in Ibiono Ibom LGA of Akwa Ibom.
The donation was done with support from Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Nigeria office.
Kayode Adebisi, programme officer of KOICA, said the outreach is a social responsibility programme.
“Currently, KOICA is providing funds of up to Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000) for a period of four months from August to November 2021,” Adebisi.
“The fund is to support the delivery of free health care services to rural community dwellers within and around Afua Community.
Adebisi said the donation includes household hygiene items, 100 school bags, 400 notebooks and stationery.
Other items are sets of toothbrushes, mosquito spray repellants, body cream, tubes of toothpaste, bathing soap, disinfectants, detergents and laundry soap.
Pfizer asks Brazil to approve booster dose of its COVID vaccine
Pfizer has asked Anvisa, Brazil’s health regulatory agency, to approve a third dose of its COVID-19 vaccine.
Anvisa disclosed this on Tuesday.
The booster dose is to be administered to all age groups currently receiving the vaccine — from 12 years and above.
United Airlines sets to fire workers who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID
United Airlines says about 600 US-based employees risk termination of their appointment for not complying with its vaccination policy.
The carrier is said to be the first airline in the US to make COVID vaccination mandatory for all workers.
On Tuesday, the carrier said it would start the process of firing 593 employees who refuse to get vaccinated.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision but keeping our team safe has always been our first priority,” Scott Kirby, chief executive officer (CEO), and Brett Hart, president, notified employees in a memo.
Those affected can save their jobs by getting vaccinated before the termination date.
Nigeria records 295 COVID infections
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 295 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.
The agency, in its update for September 28, said the cases were recorded in 19 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).
The FCT recorded the highest figure with 81 cases, followed by Gombe with 43 and Osun with 32.
Other states that reported cases are Kaduna (25), Rivers (20), Delta (17), Edo (14), Ogun (11), Oyo (9), Plateau (9), Akwa Ibom (7), Bayelsa (7), Zamfara (6), Kano (4), Ondo (3), Abia (2), Nasarawa (2), Benue (1), Ekiti (1), and Niger (1).
The agency said 317 people were discharged after recovering from the infection.
The agency also said six persons died of COVID-19 related complications, bringing the total fatalities in the country to 2,695.
According to the NCDC, two deaths were reported in Delta state on September 23 and September 26.
So far, 205,047 infections and 193,260 recoveries have been recorded across the country.
Costa Rica mandates COVID vaccination for state workers
Costa Rica says all state workers will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
In a statement on Tuesday, the health ministry said private companies can also mandate vaccination for their employees.
