Dapo Olorunyomi: Nigerian media must embrace innovation, resist oppression

Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of Premium Times, has urged the Nigerian media to embrace innovation, deepen its democratic role, and resist mounting threats from political repression.

Olorunyomi spoke at a public lecture held at the Modupe Folorunso Alakija auditorium, faculty of communication and media studies, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.

In the lecture titled “Nigerian journalism under the digital and democratic crossfire,” the veteran journalist reflected on the enduring legacy of the late Samuel Ajayi Crowther, highlighting his contributions to Nigeria’s public sphere.

He said Crowther’s pioneering work in education, literacy, and cultural bridge-building laid the foundation for the libertarian ideals that define Nigeria’s vibrant press and civic discourse.

“Crowther’s legacy reminds us that journalism and public discourse remain indispensable to our ongoing struggle for substantive independence and democracy,” Olorunyomi said.

He described Nigerian journalism as “both a mirror and a motor of democracy”, warning of the risks posed by digital technologies, including disinformation, surveillance, algorithmic manipulation by global tech platforms, and threats to journalist safety.

He said Nigerian press must invest in strengthening institutional resilience, investing in media literacy, embracing fact-checking and cross-border collaborations for survival.

“The future of Nigerian journalism will depend on how effectively we — as journalists, regulators, educators, and citizens — navigate the possibilities and perils of our time to ensure that journalism remains a pillar of our democracy,” he said.
