Sunday Dare, minister of youth and sports development, says the 20th national sports festival will kick off on April 2, with 8000 athletes vying for medals.

Speaking on Saturday during a tour of the facilities in Edo, Dare said the opening ceremony will be held on April 6.

Edo state won the hosting rights of the festival in 2018.

Dare said there will be a collaboration between the sports ministry, the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19, and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to provide test kits and vaccination for athletes.

Dare said: “On April 2nd, 2021, the camp for the Edo Festival would be opened, on April 6th the official opening of the festival by Mr President would take place.

“But beyond that, we are also working closely with the PTF, NCDC and others to ensure that the necessary support we need in terms of vaccination of atheletes, test kits will be available.

“We are also toning down the number of athletes that would be participating from 14,000 to 8,000.”

The festival had suffered several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
