Sunday Dare, minister of youth and sports development, was on Wednesday night awarded the “best-performing minister” prize at the Nigeria Sports Governor Merit Award and Nigeria Philanthropist Merit Award.

Dare, who was represented at the event held at the Shehu Yar’ Adua Centre in Abuja by Bamiduro Olumide, his special assistant on policy, thanked the organisers for what he described as a special recognition accorded him.

“This award and the other awards I have received are some of the evidence of the commitment of the Buhari administration to the growth of the youth and sports sector,” the minister said.

“I am also grateful for the opportunity given me to serve and make an impact in the lives of our youth.”

Since his assumption of office in August 2019, Dare has introduced numerous programmes, initiatives, and policies that have “positively impacted the youth and sports sectors in the country and led to success in international competitions.”

Recipients of awards at the event include Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo state, and Betsy, his wife; Philip Shuaibu, the deputy governor of Edo; Habu Gumel, president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC); and Buba Marwa, the director general of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Others are Yakubu Mohammed, former director general of the Nigeria Television Authority; Musa Nimord, president of Nigeria Volleyball Federation; and Daniel Igali, president of Nigeria Wrestling Federation.
