As Muslims in Nigeria engage in different activities to commemorate Eid Maulud, the birth of Prophet Mohammed, Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA), is marking his fourth day within the confines of Kuje prison.

On Monday, Peter Affem, a justice of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court, granted bail to the retired military colonel, alongside four others but ordered that they be remanded in prison pending the perfection of their bail conditions.

Those detained with Dasuki were: Attahiru Bafarawa, former Sokoto governor; Bashir Yuguda, former minister of state for finance; Shuaibu Salisu, and Sagir, Bafarawa’s son.

They were granted bail in the sum of N250 million each and asked to provide two sureties in like sum as well as deposit their international passports at the court.

Before granting the bail, the judge held that “bail was not about setting anybody free” but that “the primary essence of bail is to ensure that the accused person attends trial”.

He also posited that the offences the accused persons were alleged to have committed were bailable and adjourned the case to February 2 and February 3, 2016.

However, as at the time of filing this report, the detainees have not been able to fulfil their bail conditions.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned them on a 22-count charge of conspiracy, bribery, abuse of office and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N28 billion.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

How could a civil servant or retired civil servant have 250 million property unless he has engaged in fraud. If any either retired or non retired should boast of such huge amount he should be probed.
