David Mark, former president of the senate, has condemned the latest attacks in Otukpo and Ado LGAs of Benue state.

At least 15 persons were reportedly killed on Tuesday night when gunmen invaded Otobi-Akpa and Emichi in Otukpo LGA, and Utonkon in Ado LGA.

In a statement issued by Paul Mumeh, his special adviser, Mark described the killings as “one too many” and urged security operatives to rise to the challenge.

He said the time has come for communities to organise themselves into vigilance groups to protect lives and property.

“The situation in parts of Benue state today cannot be said to be ordinary or accidental,” he said.

“It seems to me that it is an organised and premeditated action. We can no longer stand to watch our people killed needlessly for no just cause.”

Mark said while the people of Benue should remain hospitable, they must learn to distinguish between legitimate residents and invaders.

“In as much as our people should accommodate others in our communities, we must as a matter of necessity differentiate between legitimate residents and invaders,” he said.

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies working to restore peace.

Mark also commiserated with the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

On April 7, Mark warned against reprisals after a series of attacks on Benue communities by suspected terrorists.
