David Mark, the former senate president, says the “failure” of the federal government to address attacks in Benue state could force residents to resort to self-help.
He said the recurring attacks in the state have left many communities devastated, with many lives lost and properties destroyed.
In a statement issued on Monday by Paul Mumeh, his special adviser, the former lawmaker said the situation reflects a failure of the government to uphold its constitutional duty to protect its citizens.
“The primary responsibility of any government is the welfare and security of its citizens. Any deviation from this mandate constitutes a gross disservice to the people. This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with,” Mark said.

“Government must rise to its responsibility or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves.”
He urged the federal government to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of security in the region.
Mark also called on Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, to intensify efforts at the state level to guarantee the safety of lives and property.

The former senate president appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support security agencies in identifying the perpetrators of the attacks.
“This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear,” he said.
Mark urged residents to remain law-abiding and maintain their resilience in the face of adversity, warning that inaction from the government could embolden the assailants and further erode public confidence.
On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV prayed for the people of Benue over the recent killings in the state.

“I pray that security, justice and peace will prevail in Nigeria, a beloved country so affected by various forms of violence. I pray in a special way for the rural communities in Benue state who have been unceasingly the victims of violence,” he said.
