‘Death robbed us of a great scientist’ — Buhari mourns CEO of Atomic Energy Commission

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the gas explosion which led to the death of Simon Mallam, chairman, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, and five others.

The incident occurred at Sabon Tasha in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement on Sunday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, quoted Buhari as condoling with the families of the victims.

The president said Mallam’s death is a loss to the country, “especially now that his service is of great need”.

“I am deeply touched by this unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of Professor Simon Mallam, his son and others,” he said.

“The death of the erudite Professor has robbed Nigeria of a great scientist whose services were acutely needed at a time we are increasing emphasis on science and technology for development.

“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family and those of other victims of the gas explosion. May God comfort these families and give them the fortitude to bear the loss.”
